PLAYSTYLE AND SCHEME FIT

In terms of his NFL scheme fit, Mayer would likely be a good fit in a variety of offensive systems, as he has the size and athleticism to play in both a traditional and spread offense. He is effective as both a pass-catching and blocking tight end, which makes him a valuable asset for any team.

PASS GAME ANALYSIS

In the passing game, Mayer possesses the size and physicality needed to match up against NFL LB's and safeties. He has excellent hands and the elite ability to catch in traffic. He can box out defenders with his large frame and has an impressive catch radius at 6-5 to snag the football high and away from defenders. He serves up a nice route menu for a TE and is a matchup nightmare when flexed out wide in goal-to-go red-zone situations. After the catch, Mayer becomes a FB; he can break tackles or run through a defender to get yards after the catch. Overall, he does more as a possession-style TE than he does as a player making plays after the catch. That does not mean his game cannot continue to evolve with better QB play at the NFL level allowing more opportunities to be thrown open providing him a chance to do more after the catch consistently.

RUN GAME ANALYSIS

Mayer plays with a high football IQ, which translates well to his flexibility as a blocker in the run game, where he can line up in line, flexed out, or in the backfield as needed. He is not yet elite in this category, but this can be said about all TE's as they enter the NFL. What separates Mayer is he possesses NFL size. The expectation is he will enter the NFL and improve in this area over time.

FINAL REPORT

Michael Mayer is an elite-level TE prospect possessing the prototypical TE size to play an inline role at the NFL level. When mainstream football analysts allude to his pro-ready NFL ability, they are referencing his ability to play a traditional inline role combined with the versatility to be flexed wide or in the move TE (H-Back) style role. As mentioned above, Mayer is an elite-level pass-catching TE who can provide versatility as a blocker in the run game. We project he will be able to make an immediate impact at the NFL level as a rookie.
