Preseason top 5 Updated

How are the rankings compiled?

Our Composite points ranking system is comprised using a total points system that tallies the total number of polls a team is ranked rewarding a team one point for every poll they are listed based on the tier of their ranking. If you are in the top four in all six polls, you will receive 18 points.

Example 1: Clemson, Alabama and Georgia 18 points

1 point for every poll they rank <=4 total: 6 points (Tier 1)

1 point for every poll they rank <=10 total: 6 points (Tier 2)

1 point for every poll they rank <=15 total: 6 points (Tier 3)

1 point for every poll they rank >16 total: 0 points

Example 2: Oklahoma 16 points

1 point for every poll they rank <=4 total: 4 points (Tier 1)

1 point for every poll they rank <=10 total: 6 points (Tier 2)

1 point for every poll they rank <=15 total: 6 points (Tier 3)

1 point for every poll they rank >16 total: 0 points

The use of a point system allows teams ranked in more polls to carry more weight than a simple average. It still comes out in near-identical order until you get to number 17 Nebraska where Penn State appears in five of the six preseason polls with an average ranking of 15.4 yet they rank 19th in composite points or Utah who appears in three of the six preseason polls averaging a 13.67 ranking yet the point system has them 24th.
